The Southern University Law Center's Agricultural Law Institute, in collaboration with the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF), is set to host a Heirs Property Clinic on April 8, 2025. The event will take place at the Opelousas Civic Center in Opelousas, Louisiana.
The clinic aims to assist families struggling with legal and financial barriers related to inherited property. Participants will receive training on heirs' property rights, estate planning, trusts, land development, and legal assistance. This initiative seeks to equip attendees with the necessary knowledge and resources to protect their land and address legal challenges.
Dr. Marla Dickerson from Southern University Law Center emphasized the institution's commitment: “Southern University Law Center is committed to helping communities through the State of Louisiana to receive information, education, and legal services when available.” She highlighted that their Office of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives plays a crucial role in addressing issues surrounding heirs’ property.
The clinic also offers limited financial assistance for succession fees to help community members safeguard their land assets. LDAF Commissioner Mike Strain explained the significance of this effort: “LDAF is proud to partner with Southern University Law Center to host an Heirs Property Clinic. Heirs’ property...is property that has been transferred to multiple family members by inheritance when a death occurs.” He noted that unclear titles often arise when formal transfer procedures are not followed after an owner's death.
Those interested in attending can register online at www.sulc.edu/heirsproperty. The event is free and open to the public.
