The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has completed the $23 million Crescent City Connection Decorative Lighting Project. The new programmable LED system was officially handed over to New Orleans and Mayor LaToya Cantrell.

“This is a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to the power of collaboration in improving Louisiana’s infrastructure,” stated DOTD Secretary Joe Donahue. He emphasized the partnership with state, local, and city officials in realizing this vision.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell remarked on the cultural significance of the project: “The CCC Decorative Lighting Project is a powerful blend of culture and innovation, designed to showcase the very best of New Orleans." She noted that it marks progress for the city as a world-class destination.

The joint effort between DOTD and New Orleans saw both parties contributing approximately half of the total costs. In under a year, 1660 LED lights were installed. The system features colors and themes that illuminate both twin cantilever bridges' trusses and piers each night.

Louisiana State Senator Royce Duplessis commented on its symbolic value: “The Crescent City Connection is more than just a bridge - it’s a symbol of New Orleans’ strength, culture, and connectivity.”

The original lighting from 1987 had suffered wear, tear, and hurricane damage. In 2022, DOTD opted for replacement instead of repair due to cost-effectiveness. Frischhertz Electric installed the new system while Modjeski and Masters designed it. Both companies have historical ties to New Orleans.

New Orleans will manage programming and maintenance with pre-set scenes for various events like Mardi Gras or Christmas. State Representative Mandie Landry expressed personal excitement about these changes.

Officials anticipate economic growth stemming from this upgrade, starting with Super Bowl weekend when the bridge will glow red and green for the Chiefs vs Eagles matchup.

Michael Hecht from Greater New Orleans Inc. praised this development: “‘Instant Icon’ – promise delivered! The Crescent City Connection is not just a vital infrastructure asset—it’s a symbolic gateway to our region’s culture, commerce, and community.”
