The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has issued a reminder to drivers to exercise caution during rainy weather, emphasizing the importance of safe driving practices in such conditions.
To help avoid accidents, especially on high-speed roads like interstates, DOTD suggests several safety measures. These include reducing speed due to decreased traction on wet roads, increasing the distance between vehicles for better stopping capability, and braking gently to prevent sliding. Drivers are also advised to steer clear of standing water to avoid skidding or hydroplaning.
"Turn on your headlights: This increases your visibility and helps other drivers see you," DOTD advises. The department also recommends against using cruise control in wet conditions and encourages pulling over if visibility becomes severely limited due to fog or heavy rain.
Furthermore, motorists should minimize distractions such as cell phone use and never drive while impaired, including under the influence of prescription medication that may impair judgment.
Recent incidents involving 18-wheelers and other vehicles have been reported during heavy rain along the I-220 corridor at the I-49 interchange in Shreveport and other state interstates. As a response, DOTD plans to apply a friction surface treatment on the I-220 pavement at this interchange as an additional safety measure. This treatment aims to enhance vehicle control in both wet and dry conditions.
Despite these improvements, DOTD stresses that "it is imperative that drivers make good decisions behind the wheel," particularly during adverse weather conditions or when road circumstances change. Such vigilance is crucial for preventing crashes and ensuring road safety for all users.
