The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has secured an additional $3 million from the Louisiana Legislature to support litter pickup along major federal highways throughout the state. This funding is part of an initiative to improve the cleanliness and visual appeal of key transportation routes.
The contract for litter removal recently commenced in the New Orleans area, aligning with preparations for the upcoming Super Bowl. The goal is to present a pristine environment for both visitors and residents. Additionally, early grass cutting services will be provided along interstates through an existing state contract.
Residents across Louisiana will soon observe litter removal efforts on major interstates such as I-10, I-12, I-20, I-110, and I-610 over the coming months.
In fiscal year 2024, DOTD allocated approximately $13.6 million to litter pickup, highlighting the state's commitment to maintaining clean and safe roadways. This financial investment raises questions about resource allocation since funds used for litter removal could potentially be redirected toward road improvements, maintenance, and transportation enhancements.
DOTD urges all residents to contribute to keeping Louisiana free of litter by properly disposing of waste and participating in local cleanup initiatives. For more information on how to get involved, visit https://keeplouisianabeautiful.org
