The Louisiana Department of Revenue has announced a change in its procedure for handling state sales tax returns. Starting this month, the department will no longer mail printed copies of the Louisiana state sales tax return to businesses registered for sales tax within the state. This decision is expected to save taxpayers over $100,000 annually in printing and mailing expenses.
Businesses now have three options for submitting their state sales tax returns and payments:
1. They can file and pay electronically using the Louisiana Taxpayer Access Point (LaTAP) account management portal available at www.revenue.louisiana.gov/LaTAP. This portal allows users to file returns, make payments, and view their account history and activity online.
2. Another electronic option is through Parish E-File, an online portal designed for securely filing both state and parish/city sales and use tax returns. This platform also supports filing multiple parish or city returns from one centralized location.
3. Lastly, businesses can download a printed copy of the state sales tax return from www.revenue.louisiana.gov/Forms if they prefer a physical form.
The responsibility for timely filing of Louisiana state sales tax returns and remittance of taxes due remains with the taxpayer. Non-compliance may lead to interest charges and penalties.
