BATON ROUGE, La. – Gov. John Bel Edwards was a recent guest on the popular podcast Times Like These hosted by Charles Lane, a journalist and author of the book The Day Freedom Died that details the facts of the Colfax Massacre on Easter Sunday of 1873. The massacre is called one of the worst single instances of racial violence during Reconstruction, when dozens of Black men were killed by armed white men who were angry over the election results in Grant Parish.
Earlier this year, Gov. Edwards joined Lane as well as descendants from the families of both the victims and the perpetrators to unveil a new memorial that is historically accurate and correctly details what happened that day. On the podcast, Lane has a thought-provoking conversation with Gov. Edwards about his pro-life position, how his adoption of Medicaid expansion has benefitted Louisiana in many ways, being the only current Democratic governor in the Deep South, his take on the upcoming governor’s race, and his immediate plans for the future. On a fun note, Gov. Edwards also sets the record straight on how to pronounce the place he is proud to call home, Tangipahoa Parish.
