BATON ROUGE, LA – As Louisiana’s people gather with family and friends to commemorate America’s 247th Birthday, Attorney General Jeff Landry encourages them to put safety first.“I hope all citizens of Louisiana join me in celebration of our great Nation – not only remembering the heroes and victories of our past, but also looking forward to our bright futures in the land of the free,” said Attorney General Landry. “As we celebrate with fireworks and fun, let’s please do so responsibly.”Attorney General Jeff Landry offers the following tips to help ensure a healthy Fourth of July:

  • Stay sun safe. Hydrate. Wear sunscreen and dress in protective clothing. Try to seek shade when outside and be sure to take breaks indoors.
  • Do not drink and drive. Report any drunk drivers on the road to local law enforcement. Be sure loved ones drive sober. Have a designated driver and do not abandon a friend if going out with a group. If consuming alcohol, leave your car behind and use a taxi or ridesharing app.
  • Parade carefully. Attend parades in groups, with family or friends. Establish a designated, post-parade meeting place in case your group gets split up. Lock vehicle and do not leave valuables in plain sight. Never follow floats or enter restricted areas.
  • Use fireworks with caution. Confirm no burn bans are in place. Follow your local laws. Watch fireworks from a distance and keep children away from area where fireworks are being lit. Never point or throw fireworks towards people, pets, or objects.
