When students in the Construction Engineering Technology program pitched the idea of founding a Louisiana Surveying Professional Society (LSPS) chapter on Louisiana Tech’s campus, Reginald Jeter, program chair, gladly signed on as advisor.

The student chapter, led by President Mason Macaluso of Mandeville, and Vice President John “Kyler” Hill of Oak Grove, has set out an agenda that includes professional development for students interested in surveying careers and public service. As their first public service event, the LSPS held a food drive for the Little Free Pantry Louisiana.

The drive was a success, and the organization delivered enough goods to fill the pantry box outside of Tolliver Hall, plus three additional large boxes.

“Our chapter works to connect students to professionals and help build networking opportunities and to give back to the community,” Macaluso said. “These principles were our top priorities when we founded the organization.”

“Giving back to the community is a huge part of what we hope to achieve as an organization,” Hill adds. “With this being our first service-related event as an organization, I think the results have been outstanding. We hope that as our membership grows, so does the positive impact our chapter can have on the Ruston community.”

Part of the national Little Free Pantry program, the Little Free Pantry Louisiana provides the Louisiana Tech and Ruston communities with food, personal care, and paper items. You can donate directly to the pantry by dropping off goods at the box located outside Tolliver Hall on Louisiana Tech’s campus, or at one of three other locations around Ruston: the Phi Delt Theta House, the Christian Communication Action Center, and the Boys and Girls Club of Ruston.

“It is important for professionals like civil engineers and land surveyors to give back to society,” Jeter noted. “Giving back is something that will continue through the careers of the LSPS members.”

The LSPS is open to new members. To learn more about the Louisiana Tech chapter, contact Macaluso.
