House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) objected to the “rushed impeachment” which came after the mayhem at the Capitol.
Scalise filled the room with positivity and motivation before calmly stating his opposition to the impeachment.
He said, “We need to be focused on toning down the rhetoric and helping heal this nation,” as President-elect Joe Biden will be sworn in on Jan. 20.
Rep. Scalise called for a round of applause from the House for Capitol Police officers who defended the U.S. Capitol during the attack.
“My prayers, Madam Speaker, are still with Capitol Police officer Sicknick, who we lost, as well as all of the Capitol Police officers who risked their lives to keep us safe. They are true heroes, and they deserve all of our applause today,” he said as the House members paused their debate to hail the officers.”
“I’ve seen the dark evil of political violence firsthand. And it needs to stop.”
“I oppose this rushed impeachment brought forward without a single hearing. And by the way, the Senate will not even take this up until President Trump is out of office. So let us keep that in mind: it will only serve to further divide a nation that is calling out for healing,” he said.
Before yielding back, he referred to President Abraham Lincoln who said in his second inaugural speech:
‘With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan, to do all, which may achieve and cherish, a just and lasting peace among ourselves. And with all our nations.’ “
“In times like these, let’s not reach for our darkest demons but instead, like Lincoln, seek the higher ground,” he continued. “May God bless this great United States of America.”
The Democrats immediately pushed for impeachment which can possibly block Trump from running office in 2024.
If the impeachment and conviction will add the terms of automatic disqualification, Trump would be ineligible to run for future office, according to WUSA 9.
