A walk-off celebration in the ninth inning turned into the longest state championship baseball game in Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) history, according to a May 21 statement by Ethan W. Anderson.
The event matters because it highlights the unpredictable and emotional nature of high school sports, as well as the resilience of student-athletes who compete for state titles. The Division I Select State Championship at McMurry Park saw Catholic and Brother Martin battle through confusion and endurance before a winner was decided.
During the bottom of the ninth inning, Catholic appeared to secure its third straight state championship when a bases-loaded walk forced home what seemed like the winning run. Players celebrated on the field, but confusion quickly followed when it was discovered that batter Jude Schneider had not touched first base after drawing his walk. Brother Martin catcher Tyler Durand appealed at first base, resulting in an out and extending the game.
Both teams continued playing through six more innings, with players pushing themselves beyond normal limits as pitch counts climbed and exhaustion set in. “That’s the beauty and cruelty of baseball. There is no clock to save you. No overtime designed to force an ending. You just keep playing until somebody earns it,” Anderson said.
After nearly five hours of play, Myles Auxt led off with a single in the bottom of the 15th inning for Catholic. Schneider executed a sacrifice bunt before Harrison Kidder drove in Auxt with a line drive into center field for a true walk-off victory this time, giving Catholic a 2-0 win over Brother Martin.
Anderson concluded that while box scores will show only numbers and innings played, they cannot capture “the shock of watching a championship celebration disappear in real time or the disbelief that slowly spread through the stadium as inning after inning passed without an ending.” He added that moments like these are what make high school athletics memorable for everyone involved.
