ULM baseball lost to Arkansas State 3-2 on April 17, despite taking an early two-run lead in the first inning.
The game was significant as it marked a setback for ULM (20-18, 8-8 Sun Belt) in their ongoing series against Arkansas State (23-14, 8-8 Sun Belt), with both teams tied in conference play. The outcome also highlights challenges for ULM’s offense as they seek consistency late in the season.
After a strong start that included two-out singles by Jake Haggard and Bryce Blaser and an RBI single from Marcus Aranda, ULM led by two runs. However, Arkansas State responded with a solo home run from Cason Campbell and capitalized on a throwing error and RBI single in the fifth inning to take the lead. Andrew Allen earned the win for Arkansas State, pitching seven innings with six scoreless frames.
Head coach Ford Pemberton said, “We pitched well enough to win the game tonight. Offensively, we have to do a better job.” He also credited Allen’s performance: “Give credit to him (Allen), he did a really good job. He threw a lot of competitive pitches throughout the game.” Pemberton praised his own pitcher Adam Brodnax: “I liked how Brodnax pitched tonight. He pitched well enough to give us a chance to win.”
Despite efforts from Brodnax and Tyler Roark on the mound—both delivering scoreless innings late—the Warhawks were unable to generate offense after Dayne Wray’s ninth-inning double ended without further scoring opportunities.
The Warhawks will return tomorrow at noon for game two of their series against Arkansas State as they attempt to even up the matchup.
