The Tulane track and field team concluded a busy weekend of competition on April 19, participating in both the Tom Tellez Alumni Invitational in Houston and the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California. The events saw athletes contend with challenging weather conditions in Houston while achieving notable performances across multiple races.

The split competitions provided opportunities for several Tulane athletes to achieve personal milestones. The meets are part of the team’s ongoing efforts to prepare for upcoming championships and enhance their standings.

At the Carl Lewis International Complex in Houston, inclement weather led to the early cancellation of several events at the Tom Tellez Alumni Invitational, including the men’s 200-meter race. Despite these disruptions, Sofie Groeninger recorded a shot put throw of 14.04 meters, placing her fourth on Tulane’s all-time leaderboard and fifth overall in the event. Nahema Dumonteil Cabanas won the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.75. In other results, Marissa Gordon led three runners in the women’s 200 meters with an 18th-place finish (24.69 seconds), while Brianna Brand finished 24th (24.99) and Bella Carroll placed 28th (25.32). The women’s 4×100 meter relay team finished fourth with a time of 49.12 seconds.

Meanwhile at Azusa’s Bryan Clay Invitational, Allison Hall ran a time of 4:49.23 to finish 74th in her section of the women’s open C race for Tulane’s first result there Saturday. Jasper Newton placed sixth (4:28.77) and Blezzin Kimutai was thirty-second (4:32.41) in another section; Newton’s mark now ranks tenth all-time at Tulane for that distance.

Other highlights included Elena Liano-Rengel finishing with a time of 4:23.61—fourth-best ever by a Tulane athlete—in her section of women’s invite races; Gilbert Rono clocked a program third-best mark (3:45:02) as he finished seventy-third among men’s invite runners.

Looking ahead, Tulane is scheduled to compete next at LSU Alumni Gold on April 25—a one-day meet hosted by Louisiana State University.
