The Tulane baseball team earned a narrow 9-8 victory against South Florida on May 9 at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium, ending a five-game losing streak and evening the conference series at one game each.
This win was important for Tulane as it broke their recent string of losses and kept their postseason hopes alive in the American Athletic Conference. The close finish saw Tulane withstand a late comeback attempt by South Florida, holding onto their lead in the final inning.
Tulane took control in the eighth inning with three runs after Nate Johnson scored on a wild pitch and Jason Wachs drove in two more runs with a single. In the ninth, pitcher Trey Cehajic entered during a tense situation but managed to secure his first save of the season—and fifth of his career—by striking out the final batter to end the game. Sam Larson started for Tulane, pitching over five innings and recording seven strikeouts. Jacob Moore was credited with the win despite giving up three runs.
Offensively, Wachs contributed two RBIs while Johnson added another two RBIs and scored once himself. Agabedis tallied both an RBI and a run scored among his pair of hits. For South Florida, Nolan Bernard took the loss after allowing two runs from relief duty.
Tulane’s performance included several notable achievements: Tye Wood extended his on-base streak to 19 games; Larson set personal season bests for innings pitched and total pitches; Cehajic became Tulane’s sixth different pitcher this season to record a save; Jason Wachs recorded his fifteenth multi-RBI game; Nate Johnson tied for second on the team in multiple RBI performances; and Hugh Pinkney’s presence behind home plate has coincided with most of Tulane’s wins this year.
Looking ahead, Tulane will play South Florida again on Sunday, May 10, concluding their series with senior day celebrations before their last home game.
