CRCL needs your vote today, tomorrow and every day through Nov. 6. CRCL is a finalist for Land Rover’s annual Defender Service Awards. The winning nonprofit will receive an SUV (and $25,000) to help further its mission. All you have to do to help us win is click here and select CRCL. You can vote once per day through the end of the contest.
CRCL was not only the first statewide nonprofit dedicated to coastal restoration in Louisiana. We are also one of the most effective and respected organizations working to defend our state, which has had more than 2,000 square miles of coastal wetlands disappear since the 1930s.
Why would we need an SUV, you ask? Among our projects is our Oyster Shell Recycling Program. We have kept more than 10.5 million pounds of oyster shell out of landfills through the pioneering program, which is one of the largest in the world, using the shell to create five reefs that slow coastal erosion, minimize storm surge and create habitat for new oysters. It’s a lot of hard work getting shell from our restaurant partners to the coast, then preparing it to return to the water, and we rely on rental vehicles to get it done, hauling our trailer filled with tools or using a flatbed trailer to move shell from a staging area to boats used in reef building projects.
We also have to rent vehicles to move tools, grasses and young trees that we plant across our coast as part of our Native Plants Program. Would you believe we have planted more than 3 million plants?
Winning this contest would allow us to spend more time and resources restoring Louisiana’s coast and less time waiting in line or filling out paperwork to pick up a rental vehicle.
We are asking you to commit to spending a couple of minutes each day through Nov. 6 to voting for CRCL, as well as encouraging friends and family members to vote for CRCL.
