The recently signed Louisiana House Bill 167 seeks to purge the voter rolls of disinformation.
According to KTBS ABC News, Louisiana HB 167 will clarify the criteria around removing deceased people from the Louisiana voter rolls. Registrars will be required to cancel the voter registration of dead voters within 30 days of receiving a death certificate.
KATC news reports that the Louisiana voter roll law will expand the practice of purging voter rolls and aid in the process of these purges.
"I am very proud of the fact that Louisiana already has a reputation for election integrity, and we have taken greater steps to maintain that standard of excellence this legislative session" Louisiana Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin said of the new legislation June 11. "These new laws and bills that remain will further guarantee that our elections remain safe, fair, accurate and transparent. I am grateful for the hard work and dedication of so many legislators."
According to Legiscan, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, signed HB 167 on June 11.
The House Rules Committee argues that the federal Senate Bill 1 will hinder states in removing false and duplicate voter registration information. According to a 2018 poll, 77% of U.S. voters support the maintenance of voter rolls. According to the Honest Elections Project poll, 64% of voters, including black (51%) and Hispanic (66%) voters, as well as urban (59%) and independents (61%), want to increase voting safeguards that mitigate fraud, not decrease them.
HB 167 was sponsored by Rep. Julie Emerson (R-Carencro). Receiving broad bipartisan support, there were no "no" votes in either the Louisiana House or Senate and only a combined 11 abstentions. Six came in the Senate and five in the House."
