Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy said that no formal procedures were followed leading up to the impeachment of former President Donald Trump.
On NBC’s Meet the Press, he said that “If it happened in the Soviet Union you would have called it a show trial,” the New York Post reported.
Pointing out that the impeachment was “called two hours before it, there was no debate or no explanation from either side" and there "was a vote based on a moment of time,” he said the House failed to build a case before the impeachment vote.
“The president wasn’t there, he wasn’t allowed counsel, they didn’t amass evidence. In five hours they kind of judged and boom he’s impeached,” he added.
When asked if he has a predetermined verdict, he said, “No, I don’t. I think it depends upon that which is presented,” he told host Chuck Todd. “We will now have hopefully presentations from both sides and we will consider the evidence as impartial jurors.”
A two-thirds vote is required to convict Trump. The article of impeachment has accused him of “incitement of insurrection” for the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol attack.
