Southside High School’s girls’ golf team won its first-ever team state championship, according to a May 10 announcement. The victory came at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) State Golf Championships, held this year at Le Triomphe Golf & Country Club.
The win marks a significant milestone for Southside, a relatively new school still building its athletic traditions. For the athletes and their supporters, the achievement represents more than just a trophy; it is seen as laying the foundation for future generations of students and athletes.
The LHSAA State Golf Championships span multiple courses across Acadiana and bring together hundreds of golfers from around Louisiana. This year was notable as it was the first time Le Triomphe hosted an LHSAA state golf event. Southside’s victory was led by junior Rhyan Marcelissen, who finished fourth individually with rounds of 75 and 77. Teammates Caroline Endsley and Avery Lusk completed the three-member squad that secured the Girls Division I title.
Marcelissen said, “It means a lot because this is one of the first state championships we’ve brought home for Southside. So it’s just very exciting to be one of those people to do it.” She added about her final round putt: “If I make the putt then it’s definitely verified that we take it, so making that putt was extra special.”
The team’s season had challenges, including injuries for Endsley, but all three golfers are set to return next year. Marcelissen said, “All three of us are returning next year. Me and Caroline’s senior year, so we want to try and win it our last year.”
Looking ahead, Southside hopes this championship will be remembered as just the beginning of many successes for its athletic program.
