Southern University won both games of a doubleheader against Grambling State University on April 17, with scores of 8–1 and 8–2. The victories came on the road and continued Southern’s strong performance in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
The wins are significant for the Lady Jaguars as they improve their conference record to 15-5, demonstrating consistency both offensively and defensively. These results strengthen their position as contenders within the conference.
In the first game, Asia George helped set an early lead by drawing a walk, stealing two bases, and scoring on a wild pitch. Ariel Burton contributed with a two-RBI single in the opening inning. Abigail Mitchell added a double in the third before Burton drove her home again. Southern maintained pressure throughout with aggressive baserunning and timely hitting. Burton finished Game 1 going three-for-four at bat with five RBIs. Pitcher Aaliyah Zabala struck out seven over six innings while allowing only one run.
During Game 2, George tripled in the third inning and scored on Laila Clark’s hit before Burton hit a two-run home run to extend Southern’s lead further. Although Grambling managed single runs in both the second and fourth innings, Southern’s pitching staff limited further damage while adding insurance runs late in the game through hits from Mitchell, Prestaisha White, Katiana Maldonado, and Clark. Hayley Hinds earned the win for Southern after pitching four innings; Jordynn Jennings threw two perfect innings with two strikeouts; Emma Rogers closed out both games effectively.
Over both games combined, Burton led all players with four hits—including a home run—and seven RBIs. George provided offensive momentum at the top of Southern’s lineup through speed and extra-base hits. The pitching staff allowed just three runs across fourteen innings while stranding several Grambling runners.
The series is scheduled to conclude Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
