Southern University Jaguars will play against Jackson State Tigers in the opening round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Baseball Tournament on May 20 at Rickwood Field. The Jaguars enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed after finishing their regular season with a 27-21 overall record and a strong 20-7 mark in conference play.
The game is significant as Southern brings momentum from a remarkable 15-game conference winning streak, positioning themselves as one of the top contenders for the championship. Their performance has been driven by balanced team efforts in both offense and pitching.
Infielder KJ White Jr. leads Southern’s lineup, entering tournament play with a .423 batting average, ranking fourth nationally, and being named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy. Ryan Hunter, Jaylon Lucky, and Kameron Byrd have also contributed significantly to Southern’s offense with high batting averages and key runs batted in.
On defense, Bobby Spencer has anchored Southern’s pitching rotation with an 8-3 record and Myles Dismute has added seven victories. The bullpen combination of Caleb Ellis and Genesis Prosper has provided stability late in games, which played an important role during their winning streak.
Jackson State enters as the No. 7 seed after finishing its season at 26-25 overall and holding one of the conference’s top offensive records with a .309 team batting average. Tyree Reed leads Jackson State offensively while Robert Tate Jr. and Pierre Cabral have also made notable contributions.
The match-up between Southern University Jaguars and Jackson State Tigers is expected to be closely contested, especially given both teams’ offensive strengths but slight differences in pitching depth heading into postseason play.
