Southern University announced on April 16 that the Lady Jaguars softball team will travel to face Grambling State in a three-game series starting April 17 at the GSU Softball Complex.
This series marks the final road games of the season for Southern, which currently holds a record of 27-12 overall and 13-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The matchup is significant as it follows a strong performance by the Lady Jaguars, who recently swept Arkansas-Pine Bluff with decisive run-rule victories and a comeback win.
Laila Clark was recognized for her contributions, earning her third SWAC Newcomer of the Week honor after hitting .625 during the last series. “The sophomore transfer hit .625 in the series, recording two home runs, a double, four RBIs, and three runs scored.” Clark ranks second in several SWAC categories including batting average (.444), home runs (9), slugging percentage (.824), and total bases (89). She is also third in RBIs (44) and tenth in stolen bases (16).
Other key players included Ava Wallace, Katiana Maldonado, Jaicee Massey, and Kira Manganello—all batting .500 or better during their recent games. In pitching, Aaliyah Zabala led with two wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff including a complete-game two-hitter. Zabala leads the conference in wins (13) and shutouts (4), while ranking second in earned run average (2.01) among other pitching statistics. Chakirrious Parker contributed with a strong outing to earn her sixth win of the season.
