U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), attended the annual Veterans Appreciation Reception in Slidell, Louisiana, to recognize veterans and their families for their service to the country.
“Today’s event celebrated being a veteran and serving our country. There is a camaraderie, even as veterans joke between the services,” said Dr. Cassidy. “They were living life as they lived their service to our country.”
Senator Cassidy, who serves on the U.S. Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee (SVAC), has worked on legislation aimed at supporting veterans and their families. His Gold Star and Surviving Spouse Career Services Act recently passed through the Senate and seeks to improve access to job counseling services for spouses of Armed Forces members who died while on active duty. He also organized an SVAC field hearing in New Orleans focused on enhancing mental health care services for veterans.
During the reception, retired Army and Navy officers expressed gratitude to those present for their service. The Northshore High School ROTC unit presented the colors, and the Knights of Columbus Regional Choir performed patriotic songs.
Mr. Chuck Sabadie, Chairman for the Veterans Appreciation Reception, welcomed Senator Cassidy at the event.
“Seventeen years ago, a group of community leaders inspired by a young sergeant home from Iraq began honoring veterans in Slidell,” said Mr. Sabadie. “We now have an annual reception with the support of the mayor, volunteers, and most importantly, our veterans. Every year we have guest speakers, and now a Member of Congress to personally acknowledge our veterans. We thank Senator Cassidy for his support and advocacy in Washington.”
