Kyle Conerly, age 33, was sentenced on March 25 by U.S. District Judge Sarah S. Vance to 33 months in prison and three years of supervised release after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Conerly’s sentencing follows his previous convictions for attempted second degree murder and manslaughter in Orleans Parish, which prohibit him from legally possessing firearms. The case highlights ongoing efforts to address violent crime and enforce federal gun laws among individuals with felony records.

According to court documents, New Orleans Police Department officers were conducting surveillance on a residence in the Holly Grove neighborhood on November 20, 2023. When officers moved in to make arrests, Conerly ran into the backyard and threw a loaded handgun over the fence. Authorities say these actions led to his arrest and subsequent guilty plea for illegal possession of a firearm under Title 18 of the United States Code.

The prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America, described as “a nationwide initiative that marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime.” The initiative combines efforts from several Department programs including Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and New Orleans Police Department investigated this case. Assistant United States Attorney David Berman handled the prosecution.
