A Mexican national, Rodolfo Aviles-Reyes, also known as “Omar,” was sentenced on February 25, 2026, in New Orleans federal court. Aviles-Reyes, 41, had previously pleaded guilty to charges including conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine, one kilogram or more of heroin, and 400 grams or more of fentanyl. He also admitted to conspiracy to launder money and interstate travel in aid of racketeering.

Aviles-Reyes received a sentence of 120 months in prison. Upon release, he will be subject to five years of supervised release and must pay a $300 mandatory special assessment fee.

Court documents show that Aviles-Reyes and his co-conspirators distributed large quantities of cocaine, fentanyl, and heroin within the Eastern District of Louisiana. The group also transported U.S. currency and narcotics between New Orleans and other states to Mexico on behalf of a drug trafficking organization.

The prosecution is part of the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) initiative established by Executive Order 14159: Protecting the American People Against Invasion. According to the release: “The HSTF is a whole-of-government partnership dedicated to eliminating criminal cartels, foreign gangs, transnational criminal organizations, and human smuggling and trafficking rings operating in the United States and abroad. Through historic interagency collaboration, the HSTF directs the full might of United States law enforcement towards identifying, investigating, and prosecuting the full spectrum of crimes committed by these organizations, which have long fueled violence and instability within our borders. In performing this work, the HSTF places special emphasis on investigating and prosecuting those engaged in child trafficking or other crimes involving children. The HSTF further utilizes all available tools to prosecute and remove the most violent criminal aliens from the United States.” The task force in New Orleans includes agents from multiple agencies such as Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), FBI, DEA, ATF as well as local law enforcement partners.

The Drug Enforcement Administration’s New Orleans Field Division led the investigation into Aviles-Reyes’s activities. Additional support came from several federal agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and United States Border Patrol along with local law enforcement bodies such as Gretna Major Crimes Task Force; Kenner Police Department; Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office; St. John’s Parish Sheriff’s Office; Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office; and New Orleans Police Department.

Assistant United States Attorney Lynn E. Schiffman from the Narcotics Unit prosecuted this case.
