The LSU Fighting Tigers will host the Texas A&M Aggies in a three-game Southeastern Conference baseball series beginning April 17 at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field in Baton Rouge. The games are scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m., with broadcasts on ESPN and SEC Network.
This matchup is significant as both teams compete for position within the SEC standings. Texas A&M enters the weekend with a record of 28-7 overall and a conference mark of 9-5, while LSU holds a record of 23-15 overall and is currently 6-9 in SEC play.
Texas A&M leads the all-time series against LSU, which began in 1907, by a margin of 34-32-1. Since joining the SEC in baseball in 2013, the teams have split their matchups evenly, each winning nineteen games out of thirty-eight played. Last season, Texas A&M won two out of three games against LSU during their regular-season meeting but fell to LSU in the SEC Tournament by a score of 4-3.
Pitching matchups announced include sophomore right-hander Casan Evans starting Game One for LSU against junior left-hander Shane Sdao for Texas A&M. Game Two will feature sophomore right-hander William Schmidt for LSU versus sophomore right-hander Aiden Sims for Texas A&M; starters for Game Three are yet to be determined.
LSU head coach Jay Johnson said: “We need to play better baseball; I know that’s simplistic, but that’s what has to happen. It’s one-thousand percent about the way we play. You have to pitch well, defend, and excel in timely or situational hitting. This team has won games when it’s done that, but it hasn’t done it enough. I think there is plenty of better baseball in us, and it’s our job to execute.”
Several players from both teams have posted strong individual performances this season. For LSU, freshman first baseman Mason Braun led his team offensively last weekend against Ole Miss with a .455 batting average over three games. Rightfielder Jake Brown leads his team with fifteen home runs and forty-nine runs batted in this year while centerfielder Derek Curiel tops the batting average chart at .362 along with five home runs and thirty-nine RBI.
On the visiting side, Aggies outfielder Caden Sorrell has recorded seventeen home runs and fifty-seven RBI so far this season while infielder Gavin Grahovac adds eleven homers among his contributions.
