Republican lawmakers, including Speaker Mike Johnson, announced on Apr. 16 that recent federal tax changes have resulted in larger tax refunds for American families, with local certified public accountants (CPAs) in Louisiana reporting positive outcomes during the current filing season.

The Working Families Tax Cuts, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), were enacted last year to prevent what Republicans described as the largest tax increase in history. The law made permanent changes to the tax code and introduced provisions such as No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime, and new deductions for seniors. According to the Internal Revenue Service, Americans are now seeing average refunds that are 11 percent higher than before.

“It is a great day because this filing season, three things are happening: lower taxes, bigger refunds, and more money in the pockets of hardworking Americans,” Speaker Johnson said at a Tax Day press conference. “We did that intentionally, and that’s exactly what’s happening. Thanks to the Working Families Tax Cuts, Americans in all 50 states are benefiting from taxes that are lower and simpler and fairer for their families.”

Several CPAs from Beauregard Parish reported significant increases in client refunds due to overtime deductions and senior credits. Randy said he prepared a return where a couple’s wages increased by 31 percent from 2024 to 2025 but still received a refund six times larger than last year because of new overtime rules. Andrew highlighted savings for retirees and oil industry workers: “For example, one retired couple realized over $1,500 in tax savings from the senior deduction alone…these changes are resulting in noticeable tax relief.” Melissa noted that senior taxpayers “are often pleasantly surprised by the tax savings it provides.” Hardy from Caddo Parish said small business owners benefited greatly from asset acquisition incentives.

By the numbers this filing season: over 53 million filers claimed at least one of these new Republican-backed cuts; average refunds exceeded $3,400; more than six million people claimed No Tax on Tips; over twenty-five million used No Tax on Overtime; thirty million seniors took advantage of enhanced deductions; five million Trump Accounts were opened; thirty-four million families benefited from an expanded Child Tax Credit; and more than one hundred five million filers used a doubled standard deduction.

Mike Johnson is currently serving in Congress representing Louisiana’s fourth district after replacing John Fleming in 2017 according to biographical information. He previously served as a state representative between 2015 and 2017 according to legislative records. Born in Shreveport in 1972, Johnson lives in Benton as reported by biographical sources, having graduated with both BA and JD degrees from Louisiana State University according to academic records.

The broader impact of these measures may be seen through continued reports by practitioners like Roy of Caddo Parish who observed: “Increased clarity and competitive rates have driven thoughtful conversations with clients focused on growth…the effects of the One Big Beautiful Bill have been positive for taxpayers.”
