Construction has begun on a $50 million project to upgrade U.S. 90 in Iberia Parish, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced. The work is part of the I-49 South (Geaux South) initiative, which aims to bring U.S. 90 up to interstate standards.
The project includes building two overpasses on U.S. 90 eastbound and westbound over the Patout Railroad, between La. 85 (Patout Road) and La. 668. According to DOTD, construction activities will include installing precast concrete piles and girders, mechanically stabilized earth wall panels, temporary detour roads, subgrade treatment, base course preparation, drainage structures, concrete pavement, signage, striping, and related tasks.
Work is scheduled from Monday through Saturday between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with some night and Sunday operations possible depending on weather conditions.
Traffic impacts are already in place as U.S. 90 westbound has been reduced to one lane with a maximum width restriction of 12 feet; this limitation will remain for the duration of the project. The eastbound side will also have intermittent lane closures with the same width restriction currently enforced. Both directions of U.S. 90 will stay open during construction.
Emergency vehicles will be able to access the area but may face delays.
The project is expected to be completed by September 2027.
DOTD described Geaux South as “a multi-billion, multi-year construction initiative to convert approximately 160 miles of the current U.S. 90 corridor from Lafayette to New Orleans to Interstate 49.”
DOTD reminded drivers: “DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with caution through the construction site and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment.”
Motorists seeking updates can sign up for MyDOTD at www.dotd.la.gov or check road closure information at www.511la.org or by dialing 511.
