The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs baseball team lost to Liberty University, 3-2, in their final road game of the weekend series on May 10. The game took place at Liberty Baseball Stadium in Lynchburg, where Liberty avoided a sweep by securing the win.
This result is significant for both teams as it impacts their standings within Conference USA. For Louisiana Tech, it marked the first time this season they dropped a series finale after winning the first two games of a weekend set.
Liberty scored early with two runs in the second inning and added another run in the third. The Bulldogs managed to close the gap with runs from Cade Patterson and Casey McCoy in the fifth inning but were unable to tie or take the lead. After putting runners on base early, Louisiana Tech struggled offensively later in the game and could not capitalize on opportunities late.
Colby Lunsford led Louisiana Tech with three hits, achieving his fifth three-hit game and joining teammates Colton Coates and Trey Hawsey as players with at least 20 multi-hit games this season. Eli Berch’s streak of reaching base ended at 19 games after going hitless, while Hawsey extended his streak to 22 games and Lunsford’s reached 21.
Head Coach Lane Burroughs said: “I feel like the collection of arms that Liberty has are probably the best that we have seen in the league. We only haven’t played Sam Houston or Western Kentucky, but they’re as good of arms that we have seen in a long time, probably since the Southern Miss series. We saw some really good arms, and I thought our guys did a great job this weekend. We came up here to win a series, and that’s what we did. I love the way this team is playing—they’re fighting, they’re playing hard and playing together. You break the game down, we made three huge baserunning mistakes in the early innings. The little things start adding up—just wasn’t that clean as far as that goes. But as far as effort and competitive edge, it’s as good as it has been all year. I’m not going to walk out of here and be down—we won the series and that’s all that matters. Obviously, we wanted the sweep but not many people come into Lynchburg and get a sweep. I’m very proud of our guys for finding a way to get it done this weekend against some really good arms.”
Looking ahead, Louisiana Tech will host Sam Houston for their final regular season home series from May 14-16 at Love Shack stadium.
