U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy has commended the Internal Revenue Service for extending tax filing deadlines for Louisiana residents affected by Winter Storm Fern. The IRS decision allows individuals and businesses in the state until March 31, 2026, to submit federal tax returns and payments.
“Families and small businesses are still recovering. Now they have breathing room to do so before worrying about taxes,” said Dr. Cassidy.
The extension follows widespread power outages and business disruptions in Louisiana just before important IRS reporting deadlines, making it difficult for many taxpayers to comply on time. Senator Cassidy advocated for this extension to help families and businesses manage their recovery.
Cassidy also joined all members of Louisiana’s congressional delegation in supporting Governor Jeff Landry’s request for a federal Major Disaster declaration after Winter Storm Fern struck from January 23–27, 2026. The storm caused significant power outages, road closures, and water system problems across northern Louisiana. President Trump later approved the disaster declaration.
Senator Cassidy is a member of the U.S. Senate representing Louisiana since his election in 2014, following earlier service in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Louisiana State Senate, according to his official website. He earned both undergraduate and medical degrees from Louisiana State University and currently serves as chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.
