A Honduran citizen, Jose Luis Paz-Bonilla, 47, has been charged with illegal reentry into the United States after previously being removed from the country. The charge was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

According to court documents, Paz-Bonilla allegedly reentered the United States on or about November 3, 2025. He had previously been removed from the country on or about September 21, 2000.

If convicted, Paz-Bonilla faces a maximum sentence of two years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, up to three years of supervised release following imprisonment, and a mandatory special assessment of $100.

Acting U.S. Attorney Simpson stated: “A bill of information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Simpson also commended the United States Border Patrol for its role in investigating this case. Assistant United States Attorney Irene González is leading the prosecution.

The case falls under Operation Take Back America, an initiative aimed at addressing illegal immigration and targeting transnational criminal organizations through coordinated efforts involving various Department of Justice programs such as Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).
