The City of Lake Charles received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its fiscal year budget presentation, according to a May 20 announcement from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.
The award recognizes excellence in governmental budgeting and financial planning, highlighting efforts to ensure clear communication and transparency in how public funds are managed. Recipients must meet nationally recognized criteria that require budget documents to function as policy documents, financial plans, operations guides, and communication tools for the public.
“This recognition is a direct reflection of the hard work, collaboration and professionalism of our entire Finance team,” said Emily McDaniel, Director of Finance for the City of Lake Charles. “I’m incredibly proud of their dedication to maintaining high standards and producing a budget that is clear, transparent and useful to both leadership and the public. I also want to thank Mayor Marshall Simien, the members of City Council and City administration for their continued support and commitment to strong financial stewardship and open, transparent government.”
Budget documents are evaluated across four major categories. To receive this award, they must achieve proficient ratings in all required criteria set by GFOA. “Receiving this recognition reflects our continued commitment to transparency, accountability and responsible stewardship of public funds,” said Lake Charles Mayor Marshall Simien. “Our residents deserve clear, accessible and well-planned budgeting that shows exactly how their tax dollars are being invested back into our community. I want to congratulate Emily McDaniel and our entire Finance Department for the professionalism and dedication they bring to this work every day as we continue building ONE Lake Charles together.”
The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving nearly 25,000 government finance professionals across North America.
Lake Charles operates under a Mayor-City Council structure with an appointed City Administrator managing daily operations according to the official website. The city extends its jurisdiction over Ward 3 in Calcasieu Parish according to its official website, reflecting a diverse cultural heritage shaped by early European settlers according to its official history page.
