U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), has written an op-ed in State Affairs expressing his support for the SAVE America Act and calling on the U.S. Senate to pass the legislation. In his article, Cassidy emphasized the importance of verifying citizenship before registering to vote as a measure to protect election integrity.
“The right to vote is sacred, and it belongs to American citizens,” wrote Dr. Cassidy.
He also argued that requiring identification to vote is a broadly supported policy among Americans. “Polling shows that over 80 percent of U.S. adults support requiring a photo ID to vote. The American people are speaking clearly on this issue. Democrats know their constituents support verifying citizenship to vote, yet party leaders are choosing to ignore them. If 80 percent of Americans back this common-sense measure, then we should have at least 80 votes in the Senate to support this bill. Therefore, inaction isn’t about public opposition; it’s about appeasing a small, fringe left-wing base.”
Cassidy concluded by stating: “The SAVE America Act is simple, reasonable, and widely supported. Democrats demand ID to buy a gun, but they won’t require it to cast a vote. It’s time to stop the hypocrisy. Pass the SAVE America Act and protect the American people’s right to vote.”
Senator Cassidy represents Louisiana in the U.S. Senate and has served since winning election in 2014 according to his official website. Before joining the Senate, he held seats in both the U.S. House for Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District starting in 2008 and earlier in the Louisiana State Senate according to his official biography. He obtained undergraduate and medical degrees from Louisiana State University as noted on his website.
Cassidy currently serves as chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions where he influences federal policy on health care, labor, education and retirement. His office includes senior staff such as a first assistant according to official records.
