U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) has joined as a co-sponsor of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which was introduced by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT). The proposed legislation aims to restrict participation in federal elections to U.S. citizens by mandating proof of citizenship during voter registration.
“If you’re not an American citizen, you don’t vote in American elections. The SAVE Act makes sure of it,” said Dr. Cassidy.
The SAVE Act would amend the National Voter Registration Act by requiring states to verify citizenship status for individuals registering to vote. It specifies what types of documentation are acceptable for proving citizenship and instructs states to create alternative methods for verification if standard documents are unavailable. The bill also requires states to remove non-citizens from their voter rolls and introduces federal penalties for anyone who intentionally registers non-citizens.
