U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) has announced his support for the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which is now headed to President Donald Trump’s desk for signature. The legislation includes several provisions that benefit Louisiana, many of which were advocated by Cassidy.
“America’s strength begins with the men and women who serve,” said Dr. Cassidy. “Let’s invest in our service members and their families to ensure the United States remains prepared to face any challenge.”
Among the measures in the NDAA are specific authorities and funding limitations concerning Medium and Large Unmanned Surface Vessels. The bill exempts unmanned surface and underwater vehicles from certain senior technical authority requirements, a move intended to speed up development and acquisition processes. This provision is expected to have a direct impact on shipbuilders in Louisiana.
Senator Cassidy represents Louisiana in the U.S. Senate, having won election in 2014 and taken office in 2015 according to his official website. Before joining the Senate, he served as a member of the U.S. House for Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District starting in 2008 and previously held a seat in the Louisiana State Senate.
Cassidy’s background includes earning undergraduate and medical degrees from Louisiana State University, working as a physician, educator at LSU Medical School, and co-founding the Greater Baton Rouge Community Clinic before entering politics (source). He currently serves as chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, giving him influence over federal policy on health care, labor, education, and retirement (source).
His office maintains locations across multiple cities in Louisiana such as Baton Rouge, Alexandria, and Lafayette (source).
