U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) has recognized Theo Chaisson, a member of the United Houma Nation and operator of the Isle de Jean Charles Marina, as part of his monthly Local Spotlight initiative. The recognition highlights individuals who embody Louisiana values such as humility, respect, and resilience.

Cassidy’s February 2026 spotlight focused on Chaisson’s lifelong commitment to his community in Southeast Louisiana. According to Cassidy, “This month’s Local Spotlight is about a man who represents the heart of coastal Louisiana—Theo Chaisson.”

Chaisson was born and raised on Isle de Jean Charles, where traditional ways of life are central to the community. “Think of families fishing and trapping together, growing their own food, and speaking French at the kitchen table. That was life in Isle de Jean Charles, Louisiana,” Cassidy said.

He noted that Chaisson left school after third grade to help support his family. By age fourteen, he was working full days and learning skills outside the classroom: “By fourteen, he was already working long days, learning a trade, and building the kind of work ethic you can’t teach in a classroom.”

Over time, Chaisson began operating the local marina which serves as a gathering place for fishermen and visitors from around the world. Now 89 years old, he continues to visit Isle de Jean Charles daily out of dedication to his family and traditions. Cassidy remarked: “Today, Theo is 89. But he still goes back to the island every single day – not out of habit, but out of love.”

Cassidy concluded by expressing appreciation for Chaisson’s example: “Theo Chaisson does all of that and more… thank you for being an example of what makes our state so special.”

Each month Senator Cassidy features local stories that reflect key values important to Louisiana communities. In January he highlighted Lilly Harvey from Jonesville for her work educating young people about opioid dangers after losing her daughter.

Senator Cassidy has represented Louisiana in the U.S. Senate since winning election in 2014 official website. He previously served in both the U.S. House representing Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District beginning in 2008 and earlier in the state senate official website. He obtained undergraduate and medical degrees from Louisiana State University official website and currently chairs the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions official website.
