U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) has criticized Senate Democrats for blocking the passage of his Shutdown Fairness Act, which aimed to guarantee pay for federal employees required to work during a government shutdown, including active-duty military personnel and air traffic controllers.

In a statement following the vote, Cassidy said, “What more evidence could you need? The Schumer Shutdown is totally about politics and appeasing Democrats’ radical base. If you can’t bring yourself to cross party lines to ensure our troops get a paycheck, you should reconsider why you ran for Congress.”

The legislation was introduced by Cassidy along with Senators Ron Johnson (R-WI), Ted Budd (R-NC), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Tom Cotton (R-AR), James Risch (R-ID), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), and Todd Young (R-IN).
