U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) spoke on the Senate floor criticizing Senate Democrats for blocking all of President Trump’s nominees from being confirmed by unanimous consent or voice vote. Cassidy argued that this action departs from the Senate’s longstanding practice, where most presidential nominees are typically approved through these expedited processes.

“Democrats are obsessed with finding every way possible to undermine the President and his agenda, no matter the cost,” said Dr. Cassidy.

He added, “Americans are sick of it. They want Congress to work. And Republicans are showing up to work.”

During his remarks, Cassidy emphasized that previous presidents—including Clinton, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden—had most of their nominees confirmed through unanimous consent or voice vote. He pointed out that none of President Trump’s current nominees have been confirmed this way eight months into his second term.

Cassidy noted that many of these nominees had received bipartisan support in committee and described the Democrats’ actions as partisan obstruction.

He stated: “What they have done to the nomination process in the Senate might be the height of their partisanship since President Trump returned to office.”

Cassidy also suggested that this behavior contributes to Congress’s low approval ratings and frustrates Americans who expect lawmakers to perform their duties.

“It’s because of stunts like this that blow up the standard operating procedure of the Senate all to score cheap political points,” he said.

Cassidy concluded by asserting that Republicans are prepared to confirm qualified nominees and serve the American people: “The American people deserve better. Republicans are ready to deliver.”
